It’s a Good Time to Clean your Pillows

With spring around the corner it’s a good time to talk about washing your pillows.

Your pillows collect dust, dust mites, fungi, sweat, and body oils over time—creating a breeding ground for bacteria and allergens. These irritants can impact your lungs and sinuses, leading to congestion, coughing, and worsened allergy symptoms, especially for those with asthma or sensitivities. Research confirms that unwashed pillows can contribute to respiratory issues, making regular cleaning essential for a healthier sleep environment. Washing your pillows on a regular schedule once every 3-6 months is what is recommended to maintain good health.

While pillowcases provide some protection, fabric is porous, allowing allergens and bacteria to build up inside. Memory foam, latex, and hypoallergenic pillows resist dust better, while down and feather pillows tend to trap less dust than synthetic ones. Polyester and synthetic pillows accumulate the most allergens and require more frequent washing. No matter the material, cleaning your pillows regularly improves air quality, reduces allergens, and helps you breathe easier while you sleep.

How to Wash and Dry Pillows Properly

Most pillows, including those filled with cotton, feathers, down, and fiberfill, can be gently cleaned by hand using a mild detergent. Machine washing can be too harsh on some materials, so this method helps preserve their structure while effectively removing dirt and odors.

Materials Needed

  • Large basin or bathtub
  • Natural detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Soft cleaning brush (optional)
  • Clean towels
  • Baking soda

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wash
    1. Strip the pillows of their cases and protectors
    2. Fill a clean basin or bathtub with enough lukewarm water to fully submerge the pillows.
    3. Add a small amount of natural detergent and ½ cup of white vinegar and mix them around in the water.
  2. Wash the Pillows
    1. Gently squeeze and press the pillows to work out dirt and stains.
    2. For stubborn spots, use a soft cleaning brush to lightly scrub the area.
  3.  Rinse Thoroughly
    1. Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean water.
    2. Squeeze the pillows gently to remove detergent and rinse until the water runs clear.
    3. Repeat if needed
  4. Remove Excess Water
    1. Press the pillows firmly (without twisting) to remove as much water as possible.
    2. Transfer them to a washing machine and run a spin-only cycle to extract additional moisture.
  5. Freshen and Dry
    1. Lightly sprinkle the pillows with baking soda to help absorb moisture and eliminate odors.
    2. Place them in direct sunlight to air dry completely, flipping them periodically to ensure even drying. Sunlight acts as a natural disinfectant, killing bacteria and freshening the pillows without the use of harsh chemicals.

This method keeps your pillows clean, fresh, and fluffy for you but will also extend their lifespan a few years.
