Keep Babies’ Toys and Play Area Germ-Free

Let’s face it—kids are messy little bundles of germs and sticky stuff! Developing a regular cleaning schedule for their toys and play area will help parents stay sane and keep the entire family healthy.

You’re probably thinking, Great, now I need to worry about every single toy my child owns too? Yes, actually, you do—but fret not! With these quick and easy steps, you’ll reclaim your domain like a true master. Well… at least until your little one becomes a teenager—but that’s a conversation for another time!

Here’s What You Need to Do

1) Stock Up on Ready-to-Use Disinfecting Wipes

I’m usually not an advocate for single-use products, but in this case, they’re a must. Keep disinfecting wipes in the nursery, car, diaper bag, and playroom. These will help you quickly clean any toy that falls to the floor or ground between deep cleanings.

Because, without fail, the one toy that lands on the floor will instantly become the only toy your child wants to play with—and you can bet it’s going straight into their mouth! If you’ve spent any time around a toddler, you know this to be true.

2) Consider Natural Cleaning Agents Like Vinegar

Vinegar is a powerful disinfectant that leaves no harsh residues or toxins behind. Contrary to popular belief, the smell doesn’t linger like bleach or multi-purpose cleaners.

To make a simple natural cleaner, mix equal parts water and vinegar. If you prefer a different scent, add a few drops of essential oils.

For small, 100% plastic toys, submerge them in the solution and let them soak. For larger plastic toys, wooden toys, or battery-operated toys, dampen a cloth with the mixture and wipe them down. You can also spray the solution onto toys before wiping them clean.

3) Put the Dishwasher to Use

Hard plastic toys without batteries or electrical components can handle the heat of a dishwasher. Always check the toy’s label or packaging to ensure it’s dishwasher-safe.

When washing toys in the dishwasher, place smaller pieces in a dishwasher basket or lingerie bag so they don’t scatter everywhere during the cycle.

4) Boil Toys for a Thorough Clean

Boiling is an easy, chemical-free way to sanitize hard plastic toys. However, always check labels to ensure the toy can withstand heat. Avoid boiling anything with paint, stickers, or decorations that could peel off.

To sanitize:

  • Place the toys in a large pot and cover them with water.
  • Bring the water to a soft boil (about 180°F or 82°C).
  • Let the toys simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  • Drain, rinse with cool water, and allow them to dry completely before returning them to the toy box.

5) Use Warm, Soapy Water

Just like washing hands, scrubbing toys with hot, soapy water is an effective way to remove germs. This method is great for toys that can’t be boiled or put in the dishwasher, such as soft plastic or rubber toys.

For wooden toys, wipe them down with a damp cloth and mild soap. Use a toothbrush or cloth to clean small crevices, then rinse with clean water.

To disinfect after washing, spray or wipe toys with a 1:1 solution of rubbing alcohol and water. Let the alcohol sit for a minute before rinsing with clear water.

6) Don’t Forget About Bath Toys

Just because bath toys spend time in the water doesn’t mean they’re clean! These toys need the same level of care as the rest.

Mold can build up inside squeezable bath toys, so regularly clean them with vinegar and water, or disinfect them with a mild bleach solution (one tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water, followed by thorough rinsing).

7) Stuffed Animals Can Go in the Washing Machine

Most plush toys are machine washable! Use the gentle cycle with cool or warm water and a baby-safe detergent. After washing, air dry in the sun for a fresh, clean feel. If using a dryer, choose a low setting—though this may cause fur to mat, requiring brushing afterward.

Avoid machine-washing weighted stuffed animals or those filled with sand or beads. Instead, treat them like wooden toys by wiping them with a vinegar solution and a damp cloth.

8) Use a Steam Cleaner

Steam cleaning is a fantastic way to sanitize without chemicals. You can use a steam cleaner on almost any baby item, from plush toys to strollers and everything in between.

By incorporating these cleaning methods into your routine, you’ll keep your baby’s toys and play area fresh, germ-free, and safe for all those sticky little hands!
